HBC History - Babelay Road Minutes

Highland Baptist Church started out being called 'Babelay Road Baptist Church. Below are some early Church minutes:

June 25, 1942: Babelay Road Baptist Church

Members of Babelay Road Baptist Church met Thursday, June 25 at 7:30 o'clock at the home of Mr. H. J. Winstead to elect officers and to discuss church affairs. Meeting was begun by two songs "Wonderful Words of Life" and "When the Roll is called up Yonder." After the songs, Mr. Spencer led in prayer and Mr. Warwick read the 25th chapter of Matthew. The meeting was led by Mr. Smith. After the meeting, the officers were elected. Mr. J. G. Davis was elected Chairman of the Building Committee; others were Mr. Edd Spencer, Mr. H. J. Winstead and Mr. Paul Sylvia. Mrs. J. G. Davis was elected Treasurer of the Church, and Miss Rhea Smith was elected Secretary and also Church Clerk until someone else is appointed. The Church will be called "Babelay Road Baptist Church." Mr. Edd Spencer was elected Superintendent of Sunday School. Mrs. Edd Spencer was elected Pianist. Trustees elected were Mr. Paul Sylvia, Mr. J. G. Davis and Mr. J. S. Smith. The church will be organized July 5. The meeting was adjourned by a prayer by Mr. Smith. 

July 5, 1942: Babelay Road Baptist Church

Meeting was began at 2:30 at the home of Mrs. J. G. Davis. It was directed by Mr. Livingstone. Meeting was opened by two songs "Amazing Grace" and Come Thou Fount." Scripture was read by Mr. Lindsay and prayer was led by Rev. Young. Mr. Young also read names of those whose letters were brought to the new church. The members then adopted a church covenant and also Peneleton's Church Manual. A short talk was given by Mr. Livingstone on "Organization of the Church." 

Members who joined by letter was Mr. (and Mrs.) Winstead, Mrs. Sauceman and Miss Marcene Roberts. Those who joined by statement Mr. and Mrs. D. D. Hendrix and Mrs. Mary Smith. Officers chosen were Mrs. Lansden as President of W.M.U., Mrs. Elizabeth Rouse as President of Training Union, and Mr. Edd Spencer as Active Deacon. Meeting was adjourned by prayer.

August 6, 1942: Babelay Road Baptist Church

Members of Babelay Road Baptist Church met Thursday, August 6 a the church for their monthly business meeting. Meeting was began by two songs and a prayer. Then it turned into the business sessions in which Mr. Edd Spencer acted as Moderator.

Reports of Monthly B.U.P.U. records were read by Mrs. Elizabeth Rouse. Records of Monthly Church and Sunday School Records were read by Mrs. J. G. Davis. Minutes of last meeting were read by Secretary Betty Rhea Smith. Two Deacons were elected by the church to be ordained at the next business meeting. They were Mr. J. S. Smith and Mr. H. J. Winstead. Other reports read were Reports of Building Committee. The church voted to borrow $400 dollars to pay off lumber debt. The election of a pastor for the church was postponed until the next business meeting. Mr. Earnest Warwick was voted by the church to preach the Sunday morning services and Mr. H. J. Winstead for the evening services. Meeting was adjourned by a prayer.
