From the Music Minister

Byron Chesney - Music MinisterMusic Ministry's role in fulfilling the Great Commission.

THE IMPORTANCE OF PRACTICE

2 Timothy 2:15: Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.-KJV

As the above Bible scripture plainly states, we are commanded to study to show that we are approved unto God. This applies to all aspects of ministry, including the Music Ministry.

The ministry of music is not to be taken lightly. After all, it is spreading God's word through song. Oh how shameful it would be, to be a stumbling block to a lost soul, just because we were too lazy to practice. Normally the first thing that a lost person is exposed to in the Church is music. That is why we must take it serious. It is our duty to strive to be the best singer, musician, and Christian that we can be, in order to carry out the great commission.

The Bible states in Psalm 95:1: O come, let us sing unto the LORD: let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation.-KJV

In order to make a "joyful" noise, we must be prepared. We must exercise our voices and practice our music to be able to follow this commandment. If we are not prepared, we will not be making a "joyful" noise, but rather a terrible noise. A terrible noise drives people away, including the lost! I for one do not want to have to answer for that on the great day of judgment. Do you?

BEING IN TUNE WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT

Another thing I would like to address is the importance of following the leadership of the Holy Spirit during Worship.

1 Thessalonians 5:19: Quench not the Spirit.-KJV

Have you ever been in a Church service and you can feel the Holy Spirit working through the congregation? The songs are spiritual, the feeling is good, and you can just tell that God is there and ready to work. But then, someone decides to follow their OWN desires and NOT the leadership of the Holy Spirit. They get up and sing a song just for the sake of singing and being heard, and it's like someone just poured a 500 gallon bucket of water on the whole congregation. You can almost visibly see the quenching of the Spirit. As fire is put out by taking away fuel, and as it is quenched by pouring water, or putting a great deal of earth upon it; so we must be careful not to quench the Holy Spirit, by indulging carnal lusts, desires, and affections, minding only earthly things.

I have personally witnessed the above scenario many times in my years of Church ministry. It is disheartening. It is a Church killer. It is an invitation for Satan to enter in and take control.

"I FEEL LEAD" TO SING OR TO SPEAK

Make sure when you "feel lead" that you are feeling lead by God and not lead by yourself.

The Word of God warns against this type of behavior:

Ecclesiastes 5:1: Keep thy foot when thou goest to the house of God, and be more ready to hear, than to give the sacrifice of fools: for they consider not that they do evil.

2: Be not rash with thy mouth, and let not thine heart be hasty to utter any thing before God: for God is in heaven, and thou upon earth: therefore let thy words be few.

3: For a dream cometh through the multitude of business; and a fool's voice is known by multitude of words. -KJV

I can't stress enough the importance of putting God's will first and our will, wants, and wishes dead last. We will never be successful in seeing lost souls saved if we follow our own will.
